EARLY YEARS ASSESSMENT

Gentle, thoughtful support to help you understand your young child

An early years assessment offers clarity at a time when children develop at very different rates and it can be hard to know whether your child simply needs more time or whether additional support or assessment might help. It gives you a clearer picture of how your child is learning, communicating and managing their world, and what will help them thrive.

What the assessment is for

This type of assessment helps you understand:

  • How your child is developing across play, communication, early learning and emotional wellbeing

  • Their strengths and what helps them feel settled and confident

  • Any emerging needs that may benefit from early support

  • How home and nursery experiences shape their learning and behaviour

It’s designed to give you reassurance, direction and practical next steps.

What the process looks like

1. Time with you to understand your child’s story

We begin with a warm, detailed conversation about your child’s early development, daily life and the concerns that brought you here. This helps build a full picture of who they are and what they need.

2. Play-based assessment and real-world observation

Your child is seen through gentle, engaging activities that feel natural to them. I combine this with observations at home and in nursery so I can understand how they respond to familiar environments, routines and relationships. This blend helps me see both their strengths and the areas where they may need extra support.

3. Clear, practical guidance

You’ll receive thoughtful feedback and a plan tailored to your child. This may include strategies for home and nursery, and where helpful, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to guide ongoing support.

Why parents find it helpful

Parents often describe the process as grounding and reassuring.

It gives you:

  • A clearer understanding of your child’s needs

  • Practical ideas you can use straight away

  • Confidence in the decisions you’re making

  • Support from someone who takes the time to truly understand your child

Further Support

Early years work tends to unfold depending on individual circumstances and thus, the scope of the work will be discussed when we meet together. You may find additional meetings with yourselves helpful as there are often many questions and topics that parents find useful to explore at this time or you may wish me to support the nursery on a half-termly or termly basis.
